If there’s one upgrade every BMW R1100S owner should consider, it’s better lighting. Not because the original headlights are unusable, but because modern LEDs make the bike dramatically more visible in traffic. For me, this is primarily a safety upgrade, with improved night riding coming as a welcome bonus.
The original lights were perfectly acceptable twenty years ago, but lighting technology has moved on dramatically. Modern LED bulbs provide a brighter, whiter beam while making the motorcycle much more visible to other road users.
After testing the Osram Night Breaker LED Smart, I wouldn’t go back.
The installation is completely plug-and-play and requires no modifications to the motorcycle.
Why Upgrade?
The factory halogen bulbs have three weaknesses:

- Remove the old halogen bulb.
- Install the Osram LED.
- Connect the driver.
- Refit the dust cover.
- Test the beam alignment.
No cutting.
No rewiring.
No external ballast boxes.
It is genuinely a plug-and-play upgrade.

The improvement is immediately obvious.
At night the beam is:
- brighter
- wider
- whiter
- easier on the eyes
During the day the motorcycle is also much easier for other traffic to notice.
For riders who regularly ride in poor weather or after sunset, this is one of the highest-value upgrades available.
Is It Worth It?
Absolutely.
Unlike many cosmetic modifications, better lighting improves both safety and riding confidence every single time you use the bike.
Considering the modest cost and the straightforward installation, it’s difficult to think of a better upgrade for the BMW R1100S.
