Why the BMW R1100S Still Matters

A boxer-powered sport-tourer built for fast roads, long days and riders who want more character than convention.

The BMW R1100S was never designed to win a showroom comparison against a superbike.

It was too heavy for racers, too committed for traditional touring riders and too unusual for people who wanted something easy to categorise. That was its problem when new. It is its advantage now.

The R1100S is one of the few motorcycles that genuinely blends sporting intent with long-distance usefulness. It has clip-ons, rear-set pegs, Telelever front suspension, a shaft drive and a boxer engine with real mechanical character. It can be ridden hard on a mountain road, loaded for a weekend away and still feel like a proper motorcycle rather than a compromised one.

It is not a Ducati. It is not a VFR. It is not a conventional BMW tourer.

It is BMW’s own answer to the question of what a sporting road bike should be: stable, distinctive, practical and slightly strange in all the right ways.

This hub explains what the R1100S is, why it became more interesting after production ended, where its strengths and weaknesses lie, and why it deserves to remain on the road rather than disappear into garages and old forum threads.
