The R1100S world is larger than any single forum, workshop, dealer or owner.
Over the years, a small number of people, communities, specialists, publications and businesses have helped preserve the knowledge around this unusual motorcycle. Some are deeply technical. Some keep rare parts in circulation. Some document its history. Others simply represent the sort of ownership and enthusiasm that makes the R1100S worth keeping alive.
This is not a complete directory, and it is not a list of sponsors or affiliates. It is a collection of people and places I genuinely respect, use or return to when looking for knowledge, parts, inspiration or practical help.
Some have been around since the bikes were new. Others are newer voices helping ensure that the R1100S does not disappear into old forum archives and broken links.

Workshop Manuals for the BMW R1100S
No single manual does everything. BMW’s own repair manual is the technical authority; the aftermarket books are often easier to use at the bench.
BMW Factory Repair Manual
Best for: accuracy, torque values and model-specific procedures
This is the manual to trust first for brakes, clutch, gearbox, final drive, electrics and anything safety-critical. It is written for technicians, so it can be terse and assumes some experience.
Editor’s view: Essential. If another manual disagrees with BMW, BMW wins.
Clymer M503-3
BMW R850, R1100, R1150 and R1200C, 1993–2005
Best for: practical repair work, photos and troubleshooting
Clymer covers the R1100S within the wider Oilhead family. It is detailed, photo-heavy and generally the strongest aftermarket companion to the BMW manual.
Its limitation is breadth: not every illustration or specification is R1100S-specific.

Haynes
BMW R850, R1100 and R1150 4-Valve Twins, 1993–2006
Best for: routine maintenance and easier step-by-step guidance
Haynes is usually more approachable for home mechanics and is well suited to servicing, brakes, suspension and common repairs.
Like Clymer, it covers several models, so check details against your exact R1100S specification.
Editor’s view: Very good. Slightly less comprehensive than Clymer, but often easier to follow.

BMW R1100S, 1998 onwards
Best for: German-speaking owners wanting R1100S-specific coverage
Bucheli is focused specifically on the R1100S, including maintenance, chassis, electrics, wiring diagrams and technical data.
It is more limited in depth than BMW or Clymer, but the model-specific focus is useful.
Editor’s view: Worth having if you read German.
