
The Hall Effect Sensor, usually shortened to HES or simply Hall sensor, is the engine-position sensor assembly mounted behind the front pulley cover of the R1100S engine.
It tells the Motronic control unit where the crankshaft is and how fast the engine is turning. The Motronic uses that information to time ignition and fuel injection. Without a valid HES signal, the engine may crank normally but not start, lose spark, cut out unexpectedly or stop once hot.
On the R1100S, the common problem is usually not the Hall sensors themselves. It is the ageing insulation on the wiring close to the sensors, where heat and time can make the cable brittle or allow moisture-related shorting. That is why faults can appear intermittently, especially in rain, after washing the bike or when the engine is hot.
Why it matters
A failing HES can leave an otherwise healthy R1100S stranded with no warning. It is one of the better-known age-related electrical risks on early Oilhead BMWs.
Typical symptoms
- Engine cranks but will not start
- Sudden cut-out when hot or wet
- Intermittent hesitation or misfire
- No spark at the plugs
- Fuel pump primes normally, but the engine will not fire
- Fault disappears after the bike dries or cools down
What owners should know
The HES is not a routine service item, but on an older R1100S with original wiring it is worth knowing whether the harness has ever been rebuilt or replaced. A proper repair often means renewing the heat-resistant wiring rather than replacing the sensors blindly.
