Paralever

    Paralever is BMW’s rear-suspension and shaft-drive system used on the R1100S.

    It combines the rear drive housing, swingarm, driveshaft and torque-control linkage into one system. Its job is not only to transmit power to the rear wheel, but also to control the way the bike reacts when the throttle is opened or closed.

    On the R1100S, Paralever is a major part of the bike’s stable, planted character.

    It helps the shaft-drive rear end behave more naturally than older BMW systems, especially during acceleration, deceleration and fast cornering.

    Why it matters

    Older shaft-drive motorcycles can rise or squat noticeably when the throttle is opened or closed. This is often called shaft-jacking.

    Paralever was BMW’s answer to that problem.

    By using a torque arm and a more controlled rear-drive layout, Paralever reduces the unwanted suspension movement that can come from shaft-drive torque reaction. The result is a rear end that feels calmer and more predictable.

    On the R1100S, this matters because the bike is built for fast roads and long-distance stability. It is not a lightweight chain-drive sport bike. It is a boxer-powered sport-tourer with shaft drive, and Paralever helps make that layout work at speed.

    Typical characteristics

    A healthy Paralever-equipped R1100S should feel:

    • stable under acceleration;
    • planted through long corners;
    • calm when rolling on and off the throttle;
    • free of clunks, knocks or vague rear-end movement;
    • smooth when the rear suspension moves through its travel;
    • predictable under load with luggage or a passenger.

    It should not feel loose, notchy, unstable or imprecise from the rear.

    Rear-end movement, knocking, oil leaks or play at the wheel should be inspected rather than dismissed as normal BMW character.

    What owners should know

    Paralever is strong, but it is not maintenance-free.

    The system includes several parts that deserve attention on an ageing R1100S:

    • final drive;
    • Paralever pivot bearings;
    • driveshaft;
    • torque arm;
    • rear shock;
    • rear-drive seals;
    • wheel mounting hardware.

    The most common owner checks are simple.

    With the rear wheel off the ground, check for play by holding the wheel at 3 and 9 o’clock, then at 12 and 6 o’clock. Any noticeable movement should be investigated. It may come from pivot bearings, final-drive bearings, wheel mounting or another rear-end component.

    Do not automatically assume every movement is final-drive failure.

    Find the source before replacing parts.

    Paralever and shaft drive

    The R1100S does not use a chain.

    Power leaves the gearbox through a driveshaft and reaches the rear wheel through the final-drive unit. This gives the bike clean, low-maintenance drive compared with a chain, but it also means the rear suspension and drivetrain are more integrated.

    That is why Paralever matters.

    It is not just a swingarm.

    It is part of the way the shaft-drive system behaves.

    A worn rear shock, loose pivot bearing or tired final drive can all affect how the bike feels. The rider may notice vague steering, instability, knocking, vibration or a rear end that no longer feels tied down.

    Paralever pivot bearings

    The Paralever pivot bearings are a known inspection point on older Oilhead BMWs.

    They allow the rear-drive housing to move correctly within the rear suspension system. If they wear, loosen or are incorrectly adjusted, the rear of the motorcycle can feel vague or develop detectable play.

    Typical signs include:

    • movement at the rear wheel;
    • knocking from the rear end;
    • vague handling;
    • uneven feeling when loading and unloading the throttle;
    • difficulty keeping the rear end accurately aligned.

    Pivot-bearing issues should be diagnosed carefully.

    Rear-wheel play can also come from the final drive, wheel mounting or other components. The important point is to check, not guess.

    Final drive is related, but not the same thing

    Owners often use “Paralever” and “final drive” loosely in conversation, but they are not the same thing.

    The Paralever is the rear-suspension and torque-control system.

    The final drive is the rear gear unit that turns driveshaft rotation into rear-wheel rotation.

    A final-drive leak, bearing issue or wheel play may show up during Paralever inspection, but it should be described accurately. This helps diagnosis and avoids replacing the wrong parts.

    Rear shock condition matters

    The rear shock is a major part of how the Paralever system feels.

    Many R1100S bikes are still on old suspension. Even if the shock is not leaking, it may be far past its best. A tired rear shock can make the bike feel harsh, vague, underdamped or unstable with luggage.

    Do not judge the Paralever system from a bike with worn suspension.

    A good rear shock transforms the R1100S. It improves stability, comfort, traction and confidence, especially on fast uneven roads.

    Paralever and riding feel

    When working properly, Paralever suits the R1100S extremely well.

    It gives the bike a planted rear end and lets the rider use the boxer engine’s torque without constant chain maintenance or dramatic throttle reactions.

    The R1100S is at its best when ridden with flow. Roll into the throttle, let the torque build, and the rear end should feel settled and secure.

    That is the point of the system.

    It makes shaft drive feel natural on a fast-road motorcycle.

    Common Paralever issues

    Rear-wheel play

    Any noticeable play at the rear wheel should be checked. It may be pivot bearings, final-drive bearings or wheel mounting.

    Worn pivot bearings

    A known ageing point. Can cause rear-end vagueness or knocking if worn or incorrectly adjusted.

    Final-drive oil leaks

    Leaks around the rear-drive housing should not be ignored. Clean the area, identify the source and inspect properly.

    Tired rear shock

    A worn shock can make the whole Paralever system feel worse than it is.

    Misdiagnosis

    Do not call every rear-end issue “final drive failure.” Check the pivot bearings, wheel mounting, shock and drive housing before deciding.

    Do not assume shaft drive means no maintenance

    Shaft drive reduces chain maintenance.

    It does not remove rear-end maintenance.

    The R1100S still needs inspection, fluid changes, bearing checks and attention to suspension condition. The system is durable when looked after, but old age and neglect matter.

    A clean, tight, correctly maintained Paralever rear end is one of the reasons the R1100S feels so composed.

    A neglected one can make the same bike feel tired and uncertain.

    Bottom line

    Paralever is one of the key systems that makes the R1100S feel like an R1100S.

    It allows BMW’s shaft-drive boxer layout to work as a fast-road sport-tourer by reducing torque reaction and keeping the rear end stable. It is strong, useful and central to the bike’s character.

    But it is not invisible.

    On an ageing R1100S, owners should inspect rear-wheel play, pivot bearings, final-drive condition and rear shock performance. Most problems are easier to manage when found early.

    A healthy Paralever system gives the R1100S exactly what it should have: stability, drive and confidence.
