
The BMW R1100S uses a hydraulic clutch system with DOT 4 fluid. If you replace the clutch slave cylinder, open the hydraulic line or flush the old clutch fluid, the system must be refilled and bled properly.
This is not difficult, but it is worth doing carefully.
Air in the clutch circuit can stop the clutch from disengaging fully. The lever may feel soft, the engagement point may move, neutral can become difficult to find, and gear selection can become unpleasant when the bike is stationary.
On the R1100S, there is also one model-specific detail that matters: the handlebar angle is steep. If the clutch reservoir is left too low after bleeding, air can be drawn into the system. Colt Self has pointed this out from direct BMW technician experience, and it is worth taking seriously.
Fill it correctly. Bleed it properly. Do not rush the final reservoir level.
When Should You Bleed the Clutch?
Bleed or flush the clutch system when:
- The clutch slave cylinder has been replaced.
- The hydraulic line has been disconnected.
- The clutch fluid is dark or contaminated.
- The clutch lever feels soft or inconsistent.
- The clutch does not disengage cleanly.
- You are doing baseline maintenance on an unknown bike.
BMW’s R1100S maintenance schedule specifies clutch-fluid replacement every 40,000 km / 24,000 miles or at least every two years.
If the bike is new to you and the clutch-fluid history is unknown, change it.
Bleed Before Reinstalling the Rear Shock and Wheel
If you are bleeding the clutch after replacing the slave cylinder, do it before reinstalling the rear shock and rear wheel.
Access to the slave-cylinder area is awkward enough on the R1100S. With the rear shock and wheel still removed, you can actually inspect what matters:
- banjo fitting;
- slave-cylinder body;
- hydraulic line;
- bleed connection;
- any sign of fresh DOT 4 leaking.
Only reinstall the rear shock and wheel once the clutch is bled, the lever feels consistent, and the whole slave-cylinder area is dry.
This is one of Colt’s best practical points: do the messy checking while you can still see and reach the parts.
What You Need
- Fresh DOT 4 brake/clutch fluid
- Vacuum bleeder or traditional bleed hose and catch bottle
- M10 bleed screw / bleed nipple for the clutch bleeding adapter
- Correct tool for the grub screw
- Clean rags
- Gloves
- Brake cleaner
- Zip tie
- Protection for paintwork
DOT 4 damages paint. Cover the tank, fairing and surrounding areas before opening the reservoir.

Step 1: Turn the Handlebar Fully Right
Turn the handlebar fully to the right.
This places the clutch master-cylinder reservoir in the best available position for filling and bleeding.
Remove the reservoir cap and rubber diaphragm carefully. Clean around the reservoir before opening it so no dirt falls into the clutch fluid.

Step 2: Fill the Reservoir With Fresh DOT 4
If the slave cylinder has been changed, the clutch reservoir may be empty.
Fill it with fresh DOT 4 from a sealed container.
Do not reuse old fluid. Do not use fluid from a container that has been open for years. DOT 4 absorbs moisture, and old fluid is exactly what you are trying to remove.
Keep the reservoir topped up throughout the bleeding process.
Do not let it run dry.

Step 3: Locate the Clutch Bleeding Adapter
The R1100S clutch bleeding adapter is mounted on the bottom right side of the frame.
It is normally closed with a small grub screw.
Remove the grub screw and install the correct M10 bleed screw / bleed nipple.

Do not force the bleed screw. Confirm that the thread is correct and that it seats properly before applying pressure.


Step 4: Bleed the Clutch System
A vacuum bleeder makes the job easier, especially if you are working alone.

Connect the vacuum bleeder to the bleed screw, open the screw and draw fluid through the system. Watch the reservoir carefully and keep topping it up.
Continue until:
- clean DOT 4 comes through;
- no large bubbles appear;
- the fluid stream is consistent;
- the clutch lever begins to feel normal.
If you use the traditional method, the sequence is:
- Pull the clutch lever.
- Hold it in.
- Open the bleed screw.
- Close the bleed screw.
- Release the lever.
- Repeat.
Never release the lever while the bleed screw is open.

Step 5: Refit the Grub Screw
When bleeding is complete, close the bleed screw and remove the bleeding equipment.
Reinstall the original grub screw in the clutch bleeding adapter.
Then refasten the adapter securely to the frame.
Wipe everything clean and inspect for leaks.

Step 6: Work the Clutch Lever
Now slowly operate the clutch lever several times.
You may see tiny bubbles rising in the reservoir. That is normal after bleeding.
Pull the lever. Let it return. Wait a moment. Repeat.
Do this until no more bubbles appear and the lever feel becomes consistent.
Do not rush this part. Small bubbles trapped near the master cylinder can affect clutch disengagement.

Final Reservoir Level
When bleeding is complete, refill the clutch master-cylinder reservoir as full as possible while still allowing the rubber diaphragm and cap to be refitted without spillage.
This matters on the R1100S because the handlebar angle is steep. If the reservoir is filled only to the normal mark, air can be drawn into the clutch circuit when the bars are angled. Once air enters the system, the clutch may no longer disengage completely.
There is one warning.
Unlike a brake reservoir, where the fluid level gradually falls as the pads wear, the clutch reservoir level can rise as the clutch wears. If the reservoir is overfilled and the clutch fluid is then neglected for years, hydraulic lock can become possible.
The answer is not to underfill it.
The answer is proper maintenance.
Fill it high enough to avoid air ingestion, refit the diaphragm and cap without spillage, and renew the clutch fluid regularly.

Step 7: Zip-Tie the Lever Overnight
As a final trick, turn the handlebar fully right and hold the clutch lever in with a zip tie overnight.
This can help any remaining tiny air bubbles migrate upward toward the reservoir.
It is not a substitute for proper bleeding. If the lever still feels soft the next day, bleed the system again.
But after a correct bleed, the overnight lever trick can help finish the job.

Final Checks
Before riding:
- Refit the reservoir diaphragm and cap.
- Wipe away any spilled DOT 4.
- Check the clutch lever feel.
- Inspect the bleed adapter.
- Inspect the slave-cylinder area.
- Check the banjo fitting if the slave cylinder was replaced.
- Confirm the clutch disengages cleanly.
- Confirm there are no leaks.
If the rear shock and wheel were removed for slave-cylinder replacement, reinstall them only after the clutch system is confirmed dry and working correctly.
Common Mistakes
Letting the reservoir run dry
This introduces air into the system. Keep topping up while bleeding.
Bleeding after reinstalling the rear shock and wheel
If the slave cylinder has just been replaced, bleed while access is still open. It is much easier to inspect the slave cylinder and banjo fitting before the rear shock and wheel go back in.
Filling the reservoir only to the normal mark
On the R1100S, the handlebar angle can allow air to enter if the reservoir is left too low. Fill it as high as possible while still refitting the diaphragm and cap without spillage.
Forgetting the grub screw
The bleeding adapter must be closed correctly when finished.
Ignoring old clutch fluid
Old fluid is usually the owner’s fault, not the motorcycle’s fault. Regular fluid changes are cheap prevention.
Bottom Line
Clutch bleeding on the R1100S is simple, but the details matter.
Use fresh DOT 4, keep the reservoir full, bleed until the lever is consistent, then finish with the reservoir filled correctly for the R1100S handlebar angle.
