A properly balanced and synchronised R1100S feels different.
The idle settles down. Low-speed response becomes cleaner. The engine feels less busy at a steady cruise, and the familiar Oilhead vibration becomes a mechanical pulse rather than an irritation.
This is not magic. It is basic maintenance.
But do it in the right order. Do not try to compensate for badly adjusted valves, worn plugs, air leaks or incorrect cable free play by turning screws on the throttle bodies. That only moves the problem somewhere else.
This guide is based on a practical method shared by long-time R1100S owner Colt Self, reproduced here with his permission and adapted for the R1100S.eu workshop library. Colt’s advice is direct: make the engine fundamentally right first, then balance the idle and synchronise the throttle bodies carefully.
BMW’s factory procedure agrees with the essentials: warm engine, correct cable free play, air-bypass screws for idle balance, cable adjustment for off-idle synchronisation, and absolutely no tampering with the factory-sealed throttle-stop screws.
Before You Touch the Throttle Bodies
Throttle-body balancing and synchronisation is the last part of the job, not the first.
Before starting, make sure the following are correct:
- Valve clearances are set correctly.
- Spark plugs are in good condition.
- Plug leads and caps are sound on single-spark bikes.
- Stick coils are functioning correctly on twin-spark bikes.
- Throttle cables move freely and are not kinked or frayed.
- Intake rubbers are not cracked.
- There are no vacuum leaks.
- Air filter and fuel filter are not overdue.
BMW specifies valve clearances of 0.15 mm inlet and 0.30 mm exhaust with the engine cold.
Do not try to tune around incorrect valve clearances.
Get the breathing right first. Then balance the idle and synchronise the throttle bodies off idle.
What You Need
- A good throttle-body synchroniser
- Cooling fan or two
- Screwdriver for the air-bypass screws
- Small spanners for cable adjusters and locknuts
- Clean rag
- Silicone grease or similar light lubricant for O-rings
- Replacement vacuum-port caps if the originals are hardened or cracked
A Harmonizer, TwinMax, CarbTune or quality manometer will work. The key is sensitivity and repeatability. You are looking for small differences.
Know the Two Adjustments
There are only two things you adjust.
1. Air-bypass screws
Often called Big Brass Screws or BBS.
The air-bypass screws balance the cylinders at idle. They control the amount of bypass air with the throttle fully closed.
In Colt’s terminology, this is primarily balance.
2. Throttle-cable adjusters
The throttle cables synchronise the two throttle bodies once the butterflies begin to open.
This is the off-idle adjustment. It affects how evenly the two throttle bodies open together under real riding conditions.
In Colt’s terminology, this is primarily synchronisation.
Do not touch the throttle-stop screws
The throttle-stop screws are factory-set and sealed.
BMW specifically warns not to tamper with them. They are not carburettor idle screws.
BBS = idle balance
Cables = off-idle synchronisation
Throttle-stop screws = leave them alone
Step 1: Clean the Air-Bypass Screws
Before warming the bike, remove the two air-bypass screws.
First, carefully screw each one in clockwise until it just seats. Count the turns as you do this. Most will be somewhere around 1½ to 2½ turns out, but record what your own bike has.
Then remove them completely.
Inspect them for dirt, carbon and crusting. A slightly dark tip is normal. Heavy contamination can contribute to unstable idle and low-speed surging.
Clean them gently.
Do not soak the O-ring in aggressive cleaner. Lightly lubricate the O-ring with silicone grease or petroleum jelly, then reinstall each screw:
- Screw it in gently until seated.
- Back it out to the number of turns you recorded.

Step 2: Check Throttle-Cable Free Play
Before starting the engine, check cable free play at both throttle bodies.
You need a small amount of slack.
BMW’s factory procedure specifies approximately 2 mm of play at the individual throttle-body cables before adjustment, then a final check for approximately 0.5 mm free play once synchronisation is complete.
The practical rule is simple:
There must always be some free play.
Never set the cables with zero slack.
If one cable is already tight while the throttle is closed, that throttle body may be held slightly open. The idle will never balance properly, and the cable can prevent both throttle plates from returning fully to their stops.

Step 3: Warm the Engine Properly
Do not synchronise a cold engine.
Take the bike for a proper 10–20 mile ride. Do not simply let it idle in the garage until it is warm.
BMW specifies an oil temperature of at least 90°C before synchronisation. It also warns not to allow the engine to idle for more than 20 minutes.
Once back in the workshop:
- Put the bike on the centre stand or hold it upright securely.
- Place one or two fans in front of the cylinders.
- Remove the rubber vacuum caps from beneath both throttle bodies.
- Inspect the caps carefully.
- Replace them if they are hard, cracked or loose.
Connect your synchroniser to the two vacuum ports.
Step 4: Balance the Idle With the Air-Bypass Screws
Start the engine.
Blip the throttle once or twice, then allow it to return to a fully closed-throttle idle.
BMW specifies an idle speed of 1,100 ±50 rpm.
Colt’s preference was slightly higher, around 1,250 rpm, but for a standard road-going R1100S, aiming close to BMW’s 1,100 rpm specification is the sensible starting point.
Adjust the two air-bypass screws in small increments until:
- The synchroniser shows equal vacuum on both sides.
- Idle is stable.
- Engine speed is around 1,100 rpm.
- Both throttle plates are fully closed.
Turn one screw at a time. Wait a moment after each adjustment. Do not chase the needle too aggressively.

Step 5: Synchronise the Throttle Cables Off Idle
Now gently open the throttle and watch the synchroniser.
Start at around 2,500 rpm, which is BMW’s factory check point. The readings should rise and fall together.
Then check again around 3,500–4,000 rpm. This is where poor cable synchronisation often becomes more obvious in real riding.
If one side is pulling ahead, adjust the relevant throttle cable:
- Loosen the cable-adjuster locknut.
- Turn the adjuster in very small increments.
- Recheck the synchroniser.
- Tighten the locknut.
- Check again.
The act of tightening the locknut can alter the adjustment slightly. That is normal. Compensate for it.
Do not remove all free play in an attempt to get perfect balance. The cables must still have a little slack.

Step 6: Go Back and Forth
This is where the smoothness comes from.
After changing the off-idle cable synchronisation at 2,500–4,000 rpm, go back to idle.
Check the air-bypass-screw balance again.
Then return to off-idle synchronisation.
Then back to idle.
You may need to repeat this several times.
Do it.
A throttle-body setup that is balanced perfectly at idle but poorly synchronised at cruising speed is not finished.
The goal is both idle balance and off-idle synchronisation:
- Balanced at idle
- Synchronised at 2,500 rpm
- Synchronised at 3,500–4,000 rpm
- With both cable locknuts tight
- With cable free play still present
Step 7: Final Checks
When you are satisfied:
- Let the throttle close fully.
- Confirm the idle returns cleanly.
- Turn the handlebars fully left and right.
- Confirm that engine speed does not change as the bars move.
- Shut the engine down.
- Remove the synchroniser hoses.
- Refit both vacuum caps securely.
BMW specifically requires checking that engine speed does not vary when the handlebars are moved lock-to-lock.
Do not forget the vacuum caps. A missing or split cap is a vacuum leak waiting to happen.
How Often Should You Do It?
BMW includes throttle-cable inspection and throttle-body adjustment/synchronisation in its regular inspection schedule.
A practical interval is:
- Every 10,000 km / 6,000 miles
- After valve adjustment
- After major intake or throttle-body work
- When idle becomes uneven
- When cruising vibration increases
- When low-speed surging becomes more obvious
Valve adjustment first. Idle balance and off-idle synchronisation second.
Always.
Common Mistakes
Adjusting the throttle-stop screws
Do not.
They are factory-set. Leave them alone.
Balancing or synchronising a cold engine
A cold engine gives a false result.
Ride the bike first.
Forgetting cable free play
No free play can hold one throttle plate open and prevent proper idle balance.
Setting idle too high to hide another problem
A high idle can mask dirty air-bypass screws, vacuum leaks or worn throttle bodies.
Fix the cause.
Ignoring worn vacuum caps
They are cheap. Replace them before they become an intake leak.
Trying to do it without airflow
These engines get hot quickly when stationary. Use fans.
