Replacing the Clutch Slave Cylinder on a BMW R1100S

The clutch slave cylinder is one of the more sensible preventive replacements on an R1100S with unclear history.

It sits at the rear of the gearbox and operates the dry clutch through a hydraulic piston and pushrod. When the slave cylinder leaks internally, DOT 4 fluid can migrate into the clutch housing. That can contaminate the friction plate and turn a relatively contained hydraulic repair into a gearbox-out clutch replacement.

The good news is that replacing the slave cylinder itself is manageable without removing the gearbox.

The awkward part is access.

This guide covers replacing the clutch slave cylinder on an R1100S, renewing the clutch fluid, bleeding the system correctly and checking the area for evidence of previous leakage.

Why This Job Matters

The R1100S uses a hydraulic clutch and a dry clutch plate.

That combination makes slave-cylinder leaks worth taking seriously. If the slave cylinder fails externally, the problem is obvious. If it leaks internally, the fluid can move forward toward the clutch instead of dripping visibly onto the floor.

That is why many owners replace the clutch slave cylinder preventively when the bike’s history is unclear.

Typical warning signs include:

  • dark or contaminated clutch fluid;
  • falling fluid level in the clutch reservoir;
  • soft or inconsistent clutch lever feel;
  • clutch bite point changing;
  • difficulty selecting gears when stationary;
  • clutch slip under load;
  • fluid residue around the rear of the gearbox.

A clean slave-cylinder replacement is a manageable workshop job. A contaminated clutch is not.

Before You Start

This is not a difficult repair, but it is not a rushed one.

You will work around the rear suspension, hydraulic line, gearbox housing and clutch pushrod. DOT 4 damages paint and plastics, so cover the tank and bodywork before opening the reservoir.

Do not begin unless the motorcycle is securely supported. Once the rear shock is removed, the rear of the bike can move more freely than expected.

The workshop manual should remain your primary authority for torque values, tightening sequence and model-specific details.

BMW’s repair manual includes separate procedures for removing the clutch hydraulic line, removing the clutch slave cylinder and bleeding the system.

Parts and Supplies

For a normal replacement, plan on:

  • original Magura clutch slave cylinder;
  • new sealing washers for the hydraulic banjo connection;
  • fresh DOT 4 brake fluid;
  • new slave-cylinder gasket or O-ring if not supplied;
  • small amount of suitable high-temperature grease for the release-bearing area;
  • clear bleed hose and waste container;
  • vacuum bleeder, if preferred;
  • brake cleaner and clean rags;
  • torque wrench where access allows;
  • standard sockets, Allen keys and spanners;
  • a way to support the bike securely with the rear wheel removed.

Do not reuse crushed banjo washers. They are cheap, and reusing them is false economy.

Use the Correct Magura Slave Cylinder

Use an original Magura clutch slave cylinder or a confirmed OE-quality equivalent.

This is one of the places where cheap copy parts can create more trouble than they save. Some aftermarket slave cylinders have been reported to be marginally longer than the original Magura part. On the R1100S, there is very little room behind the gearbox, and if the slave cylinder is even slightly too long, it may simply not fit correctly.

Other owners have also reported poor quality from some copy parts, leading to premature failure or difficulties during installation.

That is not worth it.

Replacing the clutch slave cylinder on an R1100S is awkward enough the first time. Use the right part and avoid turning a preventive repair into a repeat job.

Accessing the Slave Cylinder

The slave cylinder is mounted at the rear of the gearbox, behind the swingarm area.

There are several ways to reach it, but the most commonly documented R1100S approach is to remove the rear wheel and rear shock. This gives enough working room to access the slave-cylinder mounting bolts and hydraulic connection without removing the gearbox.

The key is not brute force. It is making enough space to work cleanly.

Step 1: Secure the Motorcycle

Place the R1100S securely on its centre stand or support it under the engine in a stable way.

You need the rear wheel off the ground. Before removing the rear shock, make sure the motorcycle cannot tip forward or sideways.

This is not the place for improvisation with unstable blocks of wood.

Step 2: Remove the Rear Wheel

Remove the rear wheel to create access to the rear suspension and gearbox area.

With the wheel out, inspect the final-drive area and swingarm for obvious leaks or excessive dirt. This is not part of the slave-cylinder replacement itself, but it is the best time to spot unrelated issues.

Step 3: Remove the Rear Shock

Remove the rear shock while keeping its hydraulic preload line intact if fitted.

Move the shock safely out of the way rather than letting it hang from the line. Removing the wheel and shock gives significantly better access to the slave cylinder and clutch hydraulic fitting.

Support the swingarm as required.

Do not let it drop suddenly.

Step 4: Protect the Clutch Reservoir and Remove Old Fluid

At the handlebar, open the clutch-fluid reservoir.

Use a syringe or suction tool to remove most of the old fluid. Do not empty it completely until you are ready to disconnect the slave-cylinder line, as this can make the later bleeding process less controlled.

Fresh DOT 4 should be ready before opening the hydraulic system.

Step 5: Disconnect the Hydraulic Line

At the slave cylinder, remove the hydraulic banjo fitting carefully.

Expect some fluid loss. Catch it immediately with rags and a small container.

Do not pull or twist the hydraulic line unnecessarily. The line routing is awkward and the fitting area is tight.

Check the banjo fitting and bolt carefully. Aftermarket fittings can differ slightly from original parts, and poor thread engagement is not acceptable here.

Step 6: Remove the Three Slave-Cylinder Bolts

The slave cylinder is held to the gearbox by three bolts.

Remove them evenly and withdraw the slave cylinder carefully. Do not force it against the gearbox cross-member or pull it out at an odd angle.

The cylinder and pushrod area may be dirty, but look carefully for fresh hydraulic-fluid residue, corrosion or a greasy mixture inside the recess.

If you find obvious DOT 4 contamination in the cavity, assume the slave cylinder has been leaking internally.

Step 7: Inspect the Pushrod and Housing

With the slave cylinder removed, inspect:

  • the clutch pushrod;
  • the inside of the slave-cylinder recess;
  • the condition of the old slave-cylinder piston and bearing;
  • any signs of hydraulic fluid travelling forward toward the clutch.

A clean cavity is good news.

Fluid or heavy contamination is not proof that the clutch is ruined, but it is a reason to be cautious.

If the clutch was already slipping under load, do not assume a new slave cylinder alone will solve it. A contaminated dry clutch may need gearbox removal and proper inspection.

Preparing the New Slave Cylinder

Step 8: Check the New Part Before Installation

Confirm that the replacement cylinder matches the original:

  • mounting pattern;
  • hydraulic connection;
  • piston depth;
  • bleed arrangement;
  • supplied seal or gasket.

Do not fit a random Oilhead slave cylinder based only on appearance. BMW used similar-looking parts across multiple models, but details can vary.

This is another reason to use the correct Magura part.

Step 9: Lubricate the Bearing Area Lightly

The slave-cylinder bearing and piston contact area should receive a small amount of suitable high-temperature grease.

Do not pack the area full of grease.

Excess grease can migrate where it is not wanted.

The purpose is simply to lubricate the contact area, not fill the cavity.

Step 10: Fit the New Slave Cylinder

Position the new slave cylinder squarely against the gearbox.

Make sure the piston engages the clutch pushrod correctly. Install the mounting bolts and tighten them evenly to the factory specification.

Do not force the cylinder into place.

If it will not seat naturally, stop and check alignment rather than drawing it in with the bolts.

Reconnecting the Hydraulic Line

Step 11: Fit New Sealing Washers

Install the banjo fitting using new sealing washers.

Make sure the line is not twisted, trapped or pulled tight through the suspension movement range.

Tighten the banjo bolt to the factory torque specification.

This is one of the few areas where “approximately tight” is not acceptable. Too loose leaks. Too tight damages threads or distorts the sealing surfaces.

Bleed the Clutch Before Reinstalling the Rear Shock and Wheel

Do the clutch refill and bleeding while the rear shock and rear wheel are still out of the way.

Access to the slave-cylinder area is awkward enough on an R1100S. Once the rear shock and wheel are reinstalled, inspection and correction become more difficult. Bleeding before reassembly lets you check the banjo fitting, slave-cylinder body and bleed connection while you can still see and reach them properly.

Only reinstall the rear shock and rear wheel once:

  • the clutch lever feels consistent;
  • no air bubbles are coming through;
  • the banjo fitting is dry;
  • the slave-cylinder area is dry;
  • the clutch disengages correctly.

It is much easier to correct a small leak now than after the rear end has been reassembled.

Bleeding the Clutch System

Bleeding is where many otherwise good slave-cylinder replacements go wrong.

The clutch circuit is simple, but air can remain trapped if the system is rushed, the reservoir is allowed to run dry or the final reservoir level is set incorrectly.

Step 12: Fill the Reservoir With Fresh DOT 4

Fill the clutch master-cylinder reservoir with fresh DOT 4.

Keep the fluid level above minimum throughout the process.

Do not let the reservoir run dry.

If it runs dry, air enters the system and you start again.

Step 13: Bleed Slowly and Methodically

Use the clutch bleed point and a clear hose into a container.

Operate the clutch lever slowly. Open the bleed point, allow fluid and air to escape, close it, then release the lever. Repeat until the fluid is clear and bubble-free.

Do not pump the lever violently.

The goal is controlled fluid movement and no air ingestion.

A vacuum bleeder can make the job easier, especially if working alone, but the reservoir must still be watched constantly.

Step 14: Confirm Lever Operation

When bleeding is complete:

  • the lever should feel consistent;
  • the engagement point should be predictable;
  • the reservoir level should remain stable;
  • no fluid should appear at the banjo fitting or around the slave cylinder.

Pull the lever repeatedly and inspect for leaks before the first ride.

Final Reservoir Level

When bleeding is complete, refill the clutch master-cylinder reservoir as full as possible while still allowing the rubber diaphragm and cap to be refitted without spillage.

This matters on the R1100S because the handlebar angle is steep. If the reservoir is filled only to the normal mark, the system can draw air into the clutch circuit when the bars are angled. Once air enters the system, the clutch may no longer disengage completely.

There is one important warning.

Unlike a brake reservoir, where the fluid level gradually falls as the pads wear, the clutch reservoir level can rise as the clutch wears. If the reservoir is overfilled and the clutch fluid is then neglected for years, hydraulic lock can become possible.

The answer is not to underfill it.

The answer is proper maintenance.

Fill it high enough to avoid air ingestion, refit the diaphragm and cap without spillage, and renew the clutch fluid regularly.

BMW’s R1100S maintenance schedule specifies clutch-fluid replacement every 40,000 km / 24,000 miles or at least every two years. The same schedule specifies annual brake-fluid replacement.

Many owners flush the clutch fluid annually along with the brakes. That is a sensible habit on an older bike.

Step 15: Refit the Rear Shock and Wheel

Only refit the rear shock and rear wheel after the clutch has been bled and the slave-cylinder area has been checked for leaks.

Refit the rear shock, confirm that all mounting hardware is correctly seated and tighten it to BMW specification.

Refit the rear wheel and torque the wheel bolts correctly.

Before riding, visually check the slave-cylinder area and hydraulic line again. You want:

  • a dry system;
  • a consistent clutch lever;
  • no sign of fluid around the banjo fitting;
  • no sign of fluid around the slave-cylinder body;
  • no trapped or strained hydraulic line.

First Ride and Final Checks

Before heading out, start the bike, select first gear and confirm the clutch disengages cleanly.

Also confirm that the rear shock, rear wheel and all related fasteners have been refitted and tightened correctly.

On the first ride:

  • check for normal clutch engagement;
  • confirm there is no slipping under acceleration;
  • check that neutral is selectable when stopped;
  • inspect the slave-cylinder area again once the bike is warm.

Recheck the clutch reservoir after the first proper ride.

A falling fluid level is not normal.

Should You Drill a Drain Hole?

Some experienced Oilhead owners drill a small drain hole in the bottom of the slave-cylinder cavity.

The idea is to provide an early warning path if hydraulic fluid leaks internally, rather than allowing it to migrate toward the clutch.

This is a recognised owner modification, but it is not BMW factory procedure.

It should not be presented as mandatory, and it is easy to drill in the wrong place. Treat it as a separate advanced modification, not as a default step in the main replacement guide.

Common Mistakes

Using the wrong slave cylinder

Use the correct Magura slave cylinder or a confirmed OE-quality equivalent.

Some copy parts have been reported to be slightly longer or poorly made. That can create installation problems or early failure.

Reusing old sealing washers

This is how small leaks become repeat jobs.

Use new sealing washers on the banjo fitting.

Over-tightening the banjo bolt

Thread damage or poor sealing is more likely than a better repair.

Use the factory torque specification.

Failing to support the bike properly

Removing the rear shock changes how the motorcycle is supported.

Make the bike stable before removing major rear-end components.

Assuming a new slave cylinder fixes clutch slip

If DOT 4 has reached the clutch disc, the repair may be larger.

A contaminated dry clutch may still slip even after the slave cylinder has been replaced.

Letting the reservoir run dry while bleeding

You create more air in the system and start over.

Keep topping up the reservoir throughout the bleeding process.

Reinstalling the rear shock and wheel before bleeding

Bleed the clutch while access is still good.

With the rear shock and wheel out, it is much easier to inspect the banjo fitting, slave-cylinder body and bleed connection for leaks.

Filling the clutch reservoir only to the normal mark

On the R1100S, the handlebar angle can allow air to enter the clutch circuit if the reservoir is left too low after bleeding.

Fill it as high as possible while still being able to refit the diaphragm and cap without spillage.

Using the wrong fluid

The R1100S clutch hydraulic system uses DOT 4 brake fluid.

Bottom Line

Replacing the clutch slave cylinder is a sensible job on an R1100S with unknown history, dark fluid or signs of hydraulic trouble.

The job is mainly about access, careful hydraulic work and not rushing the bleeding process. Remove the wheel and shock, replace the slave cylinder properly, use new sealing washers, refill and bleed with fresh DOT 4 while access is still open, set the reservoir level correctly, and inspect closely for any sign that the old unit has leaked toward the clutch.

Do it before failure, and it is a manageable workshop job.

Ignore it until the clutch slips, and it can become a gearbox-out repair.
