
The BMW R1100S is no longer simply a used motorcycle. It is an ageing Oilhead with most examples now more than twenty years old. BMW’s parts catalogue shows production beginning in 1997 and running into late 2004, while most owners refer to the road bikes as 1999–2005 model years. Either way, every R1100S is now old enough for age-related rubber, seals and neglected fluids to matter as much as mileage.
A low-mileage bike is not automatically safer. A 25,000 km R1100S that spent ten years in a garage can need more recommissioning than a 90,000 km bike maintained properly every year.
Before worrying about exhausts, suspension upgrades or cosmetics, establish a reliable baseline. These are the four jobs that deserve immediate attention when history is unknown.
The point is not to replace parts blindly. It is to remove the few age-related failures that can turn an otherwise good R1100S into a recovery truck or a major repair bill.
1. Inspect or Replace the Clutch Slave Cylinder

The clutch slave cylinder sits at the rear of the gearbox. When it fails, it can leak hydraulic fluid into the clutch area. That can contaminate the clutch disc and turn a relatively manageable repair into a gearbox-out job involving the clutch, seals and potentially other components.
This is not theoretical. R1100S owners have documented slave-cylinder leaks causing clutch contamination and loss of drive. BMW forum advice is consistent: on an R1100S with unclear history, the slave cylinder deserves inspection or preventive replacement rather than being ignored until it fails.
What to check
- Is the clutch fluid dark, cloudy or overdue?
- Has the fluid level dropped?
- Is the clutch engagement point changing?
- Is there evidence of fluid around the slave cylinder or gearbox area?
- Does the clutch slip under acceleration?
BMW’s original maintenance schedule calls for clutch-fluid replacement every 40,000 km / 24,000 miles or at least every two years. On an unknown motorcycle, change it immediately rather than trusting the previous owner’s memory.
Recommendation
If there is no evidence that the slave cylinder has been replaced in recent years, treat it as a planned preventive job. It is far cheaper than waiting for hydraulic fluid to reach the clutch.

2. Upgrade the Left Cam-Chain Tensioner

The early left-hand cam-chain tensioner is a familiar Oilhead weakness. After the bike has been parked, the original tensioner can drain of oil. On start-up, this can produce a brief but alarming rattle from the left cylinder until oil pressure builds again.
The later upgraded tensioner contains a revised internal check-valve arrangement that retains oil and pressure more effectively. Owners typically report quieter starts and less left-cylinder clatter after the upgrade.
How to identify it
A quick visual check usually tells you which version is fitted:
- 17 mm hex head: original tensioner
- 15 mm hex head: upgraded tensioner
This is well established in R1100S ownership circles and is a useful first inspection when buying a bike.
Is it urgent?
Not normally in the “stop riding immediately” sense. The original tensioner does not usually mean imminent engine destruction. But it is cheap, proven and sensible preventative work. It also removes a noise that makes every cold start sound worse than it is.
Persistent rattling after start-up should not automatically be blamed on the tensioner. Check oil level, service condition and valve-train condition properly.
Recommendation
If yours still has the 17 mm version, put the upgraded unit near the top of the list.

3. Replace Original Rubber Brake Hoses

If the motorcycle still carries its original rubber brake hoses, replace them.
This is the most safety-critical item on the list.
Old rubber lines can crack externally, swell internally or deteriorate without obvious warning. Internal degradation can restrict fluid return and cause dragging or locking brakes; outright failure can mean sudden loss of braking performance. R1100S and wider BMW Oilhead owners have repeatedly documented original lines failing internally or splitting despite looking acceptable from the outside.
What to fit instead
Use a properly made, motorcycle-specific stainless-braided/PTFE brake-line kit from a reputable supplier. Do not improvise hose lengths or fittings.
The correct kit depends on whether the bike has conventional ABS, Integral ABS or no ABS. The routing and number of hoses differ. Make sure you order for your exact model and braking system.
Do not forget the fluid
Brake-fluid service is not optional on a bike this age. BMW’s service schedule specifies regular brake-fluid changes, and this becomes even more important on ABS-equipped R1100S models.
Recommendation
If the hoses are original or their history is unknown, replace them now. Do not wait for cracks, soft lever feel or a seized caliper.

4. Renew the Fuel Hoses and Upgrade the Quick Disconnects

Fuel lines are another age problem, not a mileage problem.
The R1100S has fuel hoses outside the tank and short high-pressure hoses inside the tank. Both deserve inspection. External hoses can harden and leak; internal hoses can soften, crack or split, causing poor fuel pressure, running issues or fuel circulating inside the tank instead of reaching the injectors.
Owners also commonly replace the original plastic quick-disconnect fittings with metal units. The plastic connectors become brittle with age and can crack during tank removal. Metal couplings are stronger and make future tank removal much easier..
Best time to do it
Do the in-tank hoses when replacing the fuel filter. It is a straightforward “while you are in there” job and avoids opening the tank repeatedly.
Recommendation
Renew the external fuel hoses, inspect the in-tank hoses, fit metal quick disconnects and replace the fuel filter while the tank is open.

The Baseline Service You Should Do at the Same Time
The four upgrades above are the immediate age-related priorities. But a newly acquired R1100S with uncertain history should also receive a full baseline service.
At minimum:
- Engine oil and oil filter
- Gearbox oil
- Final-drive oil
- Brake-fluid replacement
- Clutch-fluid replacement, with the reservoir filled correctly after bleeding.
- Air filter
- Spark plugs
- Valve-clearance check
- Throttle-body synchronisation
- Battery and charging-system test
- Alternator-belt inspection
- Tyre age and condition check
- Wheel-bearing and Paralever-pivot play check
- Brake pads, discs and caliper inspection
BMW’s maintenance programme uses 10,000 km service intervals and larger inspections at 20,000 km intervals, but time matters more than distance when the bike has been sitting.
What Not to Do
Do not start by fitting an exhaust, a chip, LED indicators or cosmetic carbon parts before you know the bike is mechanically safe.
Do not assume service stamps mean the work was recent or complete.
Do not assume low kilometres mean the rubber parts are good.
Do not replace every part merely because a forum says “they all fail.” Inspect intelligently, but act decisively where the risks are known.
The Short Version
For a newly acquired R1100S with unknown history, deal with these first:
- Clutch slave cylinder — inspect and replace preventively if history is weak.
- Left cam-chain tensioner — upgrade if the old 17 mm version remains.
- Original brake hoses — replace with quality stainless-braided lines.
- Fuel hoses and quick disconnects — renew old rubber, use in-tank-rated hose and fit metal disconnects.
Do those four things, complete a proper baseline service, and you have removed most of the predictable age-related risks from an R1100S ownership experience.
The bike is fundamentally robust. It simply needs to be treated as a 20-plus-year-old motorcycle, not as a modern used BMW.
